Cognitive-Communication Disorder

Cognitive-communication disorder is a condition where communication difficulties arise

This is due to problems with cognitive processes rather than primary language or speech deficits. These cognitive processes include attention, memory, perception, insight, judgment, organization, orientation, processing speed, problem-solving, reasoning, executive functioning, and metacognition (i.e. the awareness and understanding of your own thinking processes).

An individual with a cognitive-communication disorder may struggle with paying attention to conversations, staying on topic, remembering information, responding accurately, understanding jokes or metaphors, or following directions. The severity of these disorders can vary, with some individuals experiencing mild difficulties, such as concentrating in noisy environments, while others may have severe impairments that hinder their ability to communicate at all.

A cognitive-communication disorder can result from various causes, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain infections, brain tumours, or degenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, or other forms of dementia.
